One of my favorite and most fond early internet memories is browsing Sonic fan sites.
Thanks to website builders like Geocities and Angelfire, there was tons of fan sites for all sorts of videogames. Mario, Pokemon, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, etc. My favorite ones were go through were ones relating to Sonic The Hedgehog.

Contents on fan sites vary from news, history, official and/or fan art, sprite comics, forums, chat rooms, and more!
Some of my favorites include: Sonic Stadium, Sonic HQ, TeamARTAIL, Knuckleschaotix.net, Sonic Style, and Chao Island.
(Bolded = still up and running, even if not active anymore)

While there are still fan sites for games, nowadays there are also things like social media and Discord servers for people to come together for their favorite series. Convenient? Sure but idk I kinda miss the vibe and personalization of fan sites back then. It was always an adventure browsing through these sites and wanting to see what was next ^^ Whether they're still around or are long gone, it's nice to look back on the sort of love fans would put into their sites to express their love for a series.

I'd love to hear about your experiences with video game fan sites of your favorite series. Any particular memories you have on a specific site? Maybe seeing fan art hosted on a fan site inspired you to create works of your own. Let me know! ( ´ ▽ ` )

YES!! I used to go on that one a lot ^^ I'd use the sprites to make some of my own low effort MS Paint comics. Glad to know they're back and with archives.

There’s this Pokémon fan site I like that’s still being updated called Nose Club! I’m pretty sure it’s run by just one person and it’s super neat, there’s even a hidden ARG-esque fanfic somewhere on it! There’s also the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance which you’d probably already know lol

Ohh! That sounds so cool ^^ I'll definitely check it out. And I actually haven't heard of that. What a neat site with a great concept :3

as a kid i always loved browsing darkspyro.net and kirby's rainbow resort, which are both still up to this day! i don't remember how i even stumbled upon them in the first place but i imagine it was either via google or youtube

another classic which is also still around and still the same as ever is serebii, though, despite my childhood pokemon obsession, i never used as much as the other two (most pokemon info i got was through bulbapedia or the official website ^^')

These two rule! I'll definitely check these out. Google was how I found most of my fav Sonic sites. I used to google image search "Sonic the Hedgehog" and after sifting through all the official art, went down the fan site rabbit hole from there.

Ahh yes, Serebii! That was also a childhood fav of mine. It's a relief knowing while not all but some of these old fan sites are still around ^^
