if one thing's for certain it's that given a place to talk about music i'm gonna gush about this band, so
BY THE BOUNDLESS GRACE OF THE ALPHABET BUSINESS CONCERN, I BRING YOU
THE GREATEST CULT BAND THIS ENGLAND HAS EVER KNOWN
the story and lore of Cardiacs isn't something I'm equipped to succinctly tell, but to summarize: from 1977 to 2008 ran a band of many lineups, bringing compositionally brilliant music of many styles to the masses, helmed by the truly genius lunatic Tim Smith (and of course alongside, it's him, it's him, his brother Jim)
and perhaps scratch the word "masses"; despite the incredible songwriting and sheer creativity of their catalogue, they never hit true mass success, powering along uncompromisingly on their own label until Tim's heart attack in 2008 left him unable to perform until his untimely death in 2020
(seriously, even when they got attention people fucking HATED these guys. sing to god, an album i would personally describe as "the best album ever released", got one contemporary review that gave it a 0(!)/10)
these guys are very genuinely the secret treasure of prog music, if not music as a whole. from the shadows they've had influences on bands and musicians like blur, radiohead, marillion, and more, in the same way you might've heard MF DOOM referred to as "your favourite rapper's favourite rapper". in fact, taking a guess at the demographic here i'll sweeten the deal and tell you that Sing to God is one of Neil Cicierega's favourite albums
so allow me to be the one that invites you to the metaphorical party, the way that this wonderful band has always spread. their first studio album A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window is a decent starting point to dip your toes in if you're on the fence, particularly if you like 80s rock, but no one album or god forbid song could possibly get across the breadth of their work, so i'll just advise you to eventually work your way up to Sing to God no matter how long it takes to get there
at the very least, you owe it to yourself to go listen to the entirety of Dirty Boy (the embedded song)
edit: i'll also link some specific songs for fun
Bellyeye - a catchy and fairly upbeat song with some great guitar riffs. i saw a video comparing the opening riff with smells like teen spirit and i'm telling you it was hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby
Dog like Sparky - good pick for those who like "weird music". some crazy chord progressions going on and a chorus that'll get stuck in your head for the rest of time
R.E.S. - a better showing of the wackier 80s sound of their earlier work. yknow, standard stuff, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, masterfully written solo taking up half the runtime, you know how it is
Buds and Spawn - if you've spoken with me for any reasonable amount of time you know exactly four words from this song and i'm not elaborating further
In A City Lining - as someone on RYM describes it, "the music for a boss fight level where you kill Margaret Thatcher"
Fiery Gun Hand - the best guitar solo ever recorded, you cannot change my mind
Odd Even - a fun indie track with complex vocal harmonies and a solo that i can pinpoint as the moment StG became my favourite album
over and out
