this thread exists because it has come to my attention that for most people, especially americans, riding an animal isn't within their base experiences? i heard how they have never ridden a horse before or even SEEN a horse before - i created a tumblr poll which seemed to also get the same answer from most people, that they never rode anything, or that they only rode horses. which is weird!
obviously, if i'm making a thread like this then i have something to say about the actual topic where what i say differs from what i'm talking about, so here it is:
i'm a citizen and resident of hungary, and it's extremely common, for many times a year, to hold festivals where they put out petting zoos (of usually small pets, like guinea pigs or bunnies - but can be small farm animals, like chickens, which i haven't seen done personally, but saw certain countries have it) but the main attraction here is the cheap riding of animals. what animals? mainly ponies for children, but sometimes they might have actual horses for... bigger children, but honestly adults should get the chance to ride too. sometimes donkeys are included in this event, but haven't seen mules. this is a very everyday thing that happens, people take their kids and take their friends to these events when they're planned, people know about it, it's casual. which is why i'm going to the second point:
camel rides.
riding a camel is not included in these everyday festivals, and are usually at zoos. at zoos you have special "kid zones" where they offer pony/horse and camel rides. it usually costs 500-1500 forint (that would be between 1,41 and 4,23 dollars respectively.) and the animals walk around in circles or a large area for around 1-3 rounds and then take you off them. for this, the double-humped camels are used mainly, but i wouldn't rule out that the single-humped camels are also used for this purpose.
i do not think i've seen any other animal being ridden though, besides families using their gigantic dogs as horses for their baby/very small children.
is there any other animal that's used for rides and used for different scenarios/demographics? has anybody actually seen a horse here?
