earlier today a press release was sent out announcing that neopets is now owned by an independent company instead of the huge megacorporation, netdragon. click here to read the full press release

the reception of this release is very mixed; especially because the new ceo of neopets is Dominic Law: the creator of the widely bashed neopets nft game who was still in favor of neopets being a crypto project a few months ago. this new release promises that nfts+crypto aren't in the current plans for the ip and the "neopets metaverse" game is going to be taken down and rereleased as a non-nft project. will it still be the dreaded web3? will it have a bunch of money bullshit going on? will it just get cancelled again less than a year after coming out?

reactions on the neopets fourms and social media seem very mixed. a few are optimistic, but most seem to think this will make very little actual change. some things promised in the release include:

integrating ruffle into the site to make the old flash games work again
a "unified neopets homepage" (despite there already being one: neopets.com)
fixes to the main site's layout
revamping the mobile games (island builders, a faerie's hope) to be more story based (and hopefully run better LOL)
some kind of animal jam/webkinz/club penguin esq 3d virtual world mmo app using the stuff made for the metaverse game
monthly ama's and brand ambassador programs

and a few other things like the return of certain events. personally I'm very mixed on this whole release? they're saying all the right words to get me hopeful that neopets might come back and be playable again, buuut I need to see some action behind those words! not to mention longevity. no new feature matters if it's going to be obliterated a year after being rolled out

i hope things end up going smoothly now that neopets is under new management. they can sweet talk all they want but im still very, very skeptical of them due to their prior involvement with nfts. all that can be done though is to see how it plays out. cautiously optimistic

I genuinely hope that Dominic Law has learned his lesson and actually goes for a better game instead of metaverse things. I might actually get into the game sometime, but I’m currently working on Flight Rising and returning to PCE. Might actually revive the LA Unlimited Tacos account made by the twitter back when Blaseball was still a thing.

I've had this on and off relationship with neopets for well over a decade now. I've witnessed all the major ownership transfers from Viacom (remembers when they air neopets commercials on nickelodeon??) to jumpstart/webdragon, I've witnessed the all the good, the bad and the ugly that neopets has offered. I ultimately quit neopets altogether when they were desperately trying to push their nft stuff... so I can very much understand the mixed reaction when the new ceo is the same guy who was trying to push neopets into the crypto rabbit-hole.

Although it seems that the new management really wants to push things in the right direction and listen more to userbase input (i.e. fixing site functionality ever since they changed to a new UI and implementing ruffle for their old flash games, which a lot of users have been begging for after flash shut down!)... I wanna be hopeful but at the same time there has been repeat instances of TNT promising a lot of things and failing to deliver them (cough)UC Pets(cough)

I guess its just a matter of how soon they can deliver these changes and promises. Guess this means I'll have to keep my eyes peeled on jellyneo once again haha

i've been a really casual neopets user for awhile and even with this detachment from current events in the community i know enough about how neopets situations usually unfold to be incredibly skeptic lolol. i do hope this works out though... begging for site functionality to be a priority because i haven't even been able to convince myself to use the site ever since they introduced the new ui... its such a mess.
also the idea of a neopets mmo is admittedly pretty tantalizing but i hate that it's going to be an app specifically. i wish we still got games like that prioritizing pc users

I'm honestly pretty excited considering the possibilities here, but trying not to get my hopes up too much since I've been burned by this site before. TT_TT I'm still hopeful and will be looking out for more updates to see how everything unfolds before passing judgement.
I just hope at the very LEAST the website wont be a skeleton of itself and I could actually play all the games I love on that site. (and perhaps get my dream werelupe if they finally bring back unconverted pet art lmao)
