I CANNOT BELIEVE I FORGOT TO TALK ABOUT THIS HERE. IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE TOPICS
before rhythm games got largely moved to mobile gaming, rhythm games were one of the genres that revived the arcade scene. it was honestly such an arms race just to see exactly what can be done. if you look through merely KONAMI's catalog, you can see countless concepts being explored it's honestly fascinating.
plus, nothing beats the sound of this in a crowded arcade or a movie theater

I used to play a lot of iidx but I've since fallen out of it, lately I really love chunithm and jubeat though. a lot of music that really inspires me comes from video games, and some of the art too,like aaah IIDX and BMS bgas are sometimes just really really cool.

here's some footage of the menus from iidx 9th style and happy sky, two huuge aesthetic inspirations to me:

Anyone here play or is at least familiar with Osu? A friend of mine introduced me to it around late 2019 start of 2020 but I got back into it recently. I like that the beatmaps all come from community players so you're bound to find a song you like (or if not... you can make it yourself!)

Also avid Rhythm Heaven enjoyer... even if some of the minigames are a bit frustrating to me ~~no one talk to me about lockstep or donkdonk they are the bane of my existence~~

Um soz but Since this is my thread I have to say that I had the main target of ARCADE games in mind, as those specifically are deeply rooted in late 90's/00s nostalgia. It's not a general rhythm game thread, plus I think every discussion of rhythm games on the net is already ripe with discussion about these two in comparison to the ones mentioned previously and I prefer a place to speak specifically about the niche arcade genre. Again, My apologies.

OMIGOSH i thought i was the only one obsessed with looking at IIDX UI design!!!!!! WOOOWWW THAT'S SO COOL. What's your favorite OMES from IIDX? I can't help but adore the CARDINAL GATE selection.

My brain kinda went sicko mode when I saw Rhythm games that it completely missed the arcade part of it, my bad!

My only big experience with arcade rhythm games is Pop’n Music, the aesthetics and art style are super cute… but I haven’t really gotten to play it a whole lot

BASED THREAD ALERT

i'm not great at really any RGs but i'd consider my mains DDR and taiko. mostly out of necessity for years of only having busted up european whitecabs and a switch tatacon to play on because i live in the hellish realm known as "england"

there are some solid places i've found recently though even though i gotta drive like at least two hours out, so i have to make an event outta them

(shoutouts arcade club)

been getting kinda into pop'n the last few times i've been, although i suckk at it i like the aesthetics a lot

also maimai has sega music so automatically based

being even marginally okay at arcade RGs is the quickest path to impressing strangers

I was also able to play In The Groove 2 on a real cab that same day, funnily enough. But honestly, the game arcade rhythm game I played the most in my lifetime (up until now) was Guitar Freaks, since there's a retro arcade I usually go to when visiting my dad.

It may not seem like it, but yes, I am a furry

Omg Cardinal Gate is the coolest one for sure I totally agree with you! I wish OMES was still the big dramatic thing it used to be with the crazy UIs, I know it still kinda exists now but it's not the saame :'(

Chunithm is way too hard to find and I wish it would become more common stateside! I'm kind of lucky in that my roommate has a cabinet I occasionally get to play, I love that the game has so many vocaloid songs I like in it the tracklist is great!

I love Pop'n! It's really satisfying to play and even though the skill ceiling is so crazy high I really appreciate that the barrier of entry is really friendly and low. A lot of really cute characters too.... Sigre is like, literally me it's incredible, I had to do a double take when they were released.

DrumMania is also really funny. It's not like "oh you get a kinda drum" like in rock band, no. Play on an actual Yamaha electronic drumkit

(also of note, i was referring to guitar freaks 11th mix specifically, which was before they gave the guitar 5 frets)

The fun fact is that they didn't! There's rumors that the game was cut off because people found it way too difficult. If anything, I blame the UI. It LOOKS cool but it's so damn hard to actually navigate the notes! Its cool for learning the notes of ur fav BEMANI songs...i tried to recite A on a piano from the guide on KBM
