I recently started reading this multi-media webstory called 17776 and wondered if anyone else here enjoys it!! I haven't been so captured by a story in a long long time & I hope someone can find this and read it too!
If you haven't read it, I would really love to give you a synopsis, but even a basic one sentence explanation of the plot ruins the first few chapters!! All you need to know is it's sci-fi and mostly text (with a fair amount of visuals too). It can be read here: www.sbnation.com/a/17776-football/chapter-1
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE REST OF THE THREAD!! TREAD CAUTIOUSLY!!
I am obsessed with the way the style of story-telling aligns with the values being shared inside the story, if that makes sense. For example, a lot of details surrounding how these satellites gained these communication abilities is suuuuper vague (or, it is as far as I've read), which flows nicely with the continuous theme of "wanting is natural, and must be satiated with mystery" present throughout many of the interactions between humans. We are spared the details of how this situation developed, like how the people living on Earth would want the story to be told.
I think that vagueness is also echoed through the visual style of the story. The visuals are not the main facet of communication for the meaning of the story, so they can afford to be hazey (like the videos panning through 3d-modelled cities being low-poly). I really like when stories can take advantage of the medium they're using.
Also all the characters are so fascinating! The setting and build-up of history is told effortlessly by everyday interactions between these people, some of whom we never see again. It doesn't feel like forced exposition - it shows that this is just the state of the world has been so normalized for the characters. I love the different ways the computers have contextualized this existence, and how they have all developed such distinct personalities despite being in very similar circumstances. Thats how things play out in real life too, and I really enjoy that aspect of the character dialogue & personalities.
Anyways yeah! I am really enjoying this story so far. I am not concerned with being spoiled as I'll probably finish it by the time anyone replies to this thread ;3, so if you are also a lover of this story, feel free to go off in the replies!!
